Position Overview:
The Support Staff is an essential member of the SayPro Development 5 Days Faith-Based Camp, responsible for helping to create a warm, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all participants. This role focuses on fostering social interaction, encouraging participants to engage with one another, and building a supportive community throughout the camp. The Support Staff will work closely with participants, event coordinators, and facilitators to ensure that everyone feels included, valued, and able to form meaningful connections. By supporting social interaction, the Support Staff helps create lasting bonds among participants and strengthens the overall experience.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Fostering Social Interaction:
- Encouraging Participant Engagement: Actively encourage participants to interact with one another through structured activities, casual conversation, and group discussions. Use icebreakers, team-building exercises, and faith-based challenges to create opportunities for socializing and forming connections.
- Promoting Inclusivity: Be attentive to participants who may feel isolated or left out, ensuring they have opportunities to join groups and engage in conversations or activities. Provide encouragement to help build confidence and facilitate social interactions.
- Creating Group Dynamics: Support the creation of diverse groups for activities, ensuring a mix of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. This helps participants expand their social circles and learn from each other’s experiences.
- Facilitating Group Conversations: Act as a conversation facilitator during group activities or reflection periods, helping participants feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions while maintaining respect for all viewpoints.
2. Supporting Community-Building Activities:
- Activity Participation: Actively participate in camp activities and encourage participants to engage fully. This includes team-building exercises, group discussions, religious teachings, and faith-based community service projects.
- Group Bonding: Use group activities to foster collaboration, such as small-group discussions, problem-solving tasks, or prayer services. Encourage teamwork, communication, and mutual support among participants.
- Celebrating Diversity: Ensure that social activities reflect the diversity of participants, helping them appreciate one another’s cultural, religious, and personal differences. Lead by example in creating an atmosphere of respect and appreciation.
3. Monitoring and Encouraging Positive Social Behaviors:
- Positive Interactions: Monitor group interactions to ensure they are respectful, inclusive, and supportive. Gently intervene when necessary to address any negative behavior, such as exclusion, bullying, or misunderstandings.
- Conflict Resolution: Address any interpersonal conflicts or tensions in a positive and constructive way. Facilitate open communication between participants, helping them navigate disagreements in a respectful and understanding manner.
- Encouraging Empathy: Encourage participants to practice empathy, kindness, and active listening in their interactions. Offer guidance on how to support one another in faith, personal growth, and community activities.
4. Creating a Welcoming and Supportive Atmosphere:
- First Impressions and Warmth: Be a friendly and approachable presence for all participants. Help newcomers feel welcome, and encourage existing participants to be inclusive of others, especially those who may be new to the camp or who are unfamiliar with the community.
- Providing Emotional Support: Be attentive to participants’ emotional needs. Offer a listening ear or provide guidance when needed. Help participants feel safe expressing themselves, especially in vulnerable moments during reflection or group activities.
- Building a Sense of Belonging: Ensure that every participant feels like an integral part of the camp experience. Reinforce a sense of community and belonging, where participants know they are valued, respected, and supported by their peers and the staff.
5. Assisting with Group and Social Activities:
- Organizing Social Events: Help organize informal social events or small-group activities that encourage participant interaction, such as group meals, evening fellowship, or recreational activities. These events should reflect the camp’s faith-based and community-building themes.
- Facilitating Group Introductions: Assist in introducing participants to each other in a way that fosters natural connections. This could include introducing individuals with similar interests or experiences, or encouraging people to share personal stories or testimonies.
- Faith-Focused Socializing: Ensure that social opportunities also align with the camp’s religious mission, such as incorporating prayer groups, faith-sharing circles, or group study sessions that encourage deeper connections through faith-based dialogue.
6. Enhancing Participant Experience:
- Encouraging Lifelong Bonds: Support participants in forming meaningful relationships by providing an environment that encourages mutual respect, shared experiences, and spiritual growth. Help participants understand the value of building lasting bonds that extend beyond the camp.
- Social and Spiritual Integration: Help participants integrate the social aspects of the camp with the spiritual focus. This could involve encouraging group prayers or faith-related discussions that foster connections on both a personal and spiritual level.
- Reflecting on Relationships: In group reflection sessions, encourage participants to discuss how they have connected with others and how these relationships have impacted their spiritual journey. Use these moments to celebrate the bonds participants have formed.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Experience in group facilitation, community-building, youth programs, or faith-based environments is preferred. Previous experience in a camp setting, event planning, or volunteer coordination is also valuable.
- Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds and personalities.
- Strong empathy and emotional intelligence, capable of recognizing and addressing the social needs of participants.
- Ability to foster an inclusive environment that encourages meaningful participation and connection.
- Patience, flexibility, and conflict resolution skills to handle group dynamics and individual concerns.
- Basic knowledge of religious teachings and practices, or a willingness to engage with faith-based content.

- Location: The Support Staff will work on-site at the SayPro Development 5 Days Faith-Based Camp, typically held in a retreat center or faith-based campground. Activities will take place both indoors and outdoors.
- Hours: Full-time during the 5-day camp period, with hours that may vary based on the camp’s schedule of activities. Availability is required for the entire camp duration, including evenings and weekends when necessary.
- Physical Demands: The role may require light physical activity, such as moving between different activity locations, assisting with group movement, and participating in team-building exercises. Must be able to stand and engage with participants in an active, social setting.
